Marine Science Center releases Bald Eagle at Speedway

A mid-air spat between a young American bald eagle and a seagull led to a dramatic rescue at Daytona International Speedway on March 28. The Speedway’s fire safety crew secured the eagle, who was left stunned and struggling to fly, and delivered it to the bird care experts at Volusia County’s Marine Science Center.
“After a veterinary examination, X-rays, and a flight test with the assistance of Florida Wild Veterinary Hospital in Melbourne, the eagle was given a clean bill of health and cleared for release,” said Bird Hospital Manager Kathryn Hellman.
The eagle was estimated to be around 3 years old based on its plumage. Because it’s best for birds to be released as close as possible to where they were found, the eagle was safely released just outside Turn 2 of the Speedway by Marine Science Center staff and volunteers on April 9.
The Marine Science Center is closed to the public through early June to accommodate $4.2 million in renovations and improvements that will bring new marine exhibits and expand areas for public education. Staff continues to care for incoming turtles and birds throughout the public closure.
