Lionfish, a predatory reef fish native to the South Pacific and Indian Ocean, were first seen off Florida’s coast in the 1980s. Since then, their population has exploded as they eat and compete with native fish such as grouper and snapper.
Jessica Valek, an environmental specialist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, will share information about this invasive species during a free program at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the Marine Science Center, 100 Lighthouse Drive, Ponce Inlet.
She will discuss their biology, how they can cause extinctions of native plants and marine life, and how locals can help control their spread.
Reservations are requested; call the Marine Science Center at 386-304-5545 or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
